Model Practices for Teaching Research in Clinical Pastoral Education

A group of leading researchers in the ACPE — Alexander Tartaglia, George Fitchett, Diane Dodd-McCue, Patricia Murphy, and Paul E. Derrickson — have published “Teaching Research in Clinical Pastoral Education: A Survey of Model Practices” in the Journal of Pastoral Care and Education [vol. 67, no. 1 (2013): 5:1-14 (online journal page designation)]. This study was conducted in light of the APC’s Standards of Practice for Acute and Long-Term Settings, including a standard which states, “The chaplain practices evidence-based care including ongoing evaluation of new practices and, when appropriate, contributes to or conducts research” [Standard #12]. Their project identified ACPE programs which offered “consistent and substantive” education about research to CPE residents. In addition to the forthcoming article, the authors have made available to the Research Network the syllabi from three of the model programs (with permission from each program). Supervisors may find these well-developed plans for teaching research in the context of CPE to be useful when considering the various ways of incorporating research into the curricula.
